Tristis Chiffchaff

In Kazakhstan you only get Tristis ('siberian') chiffchaffs so the visit made for an excellent opportunity to get to grips with this apparently variable eastern race.

We saw chiffchaffs most days often in reasonable numbers with up to 15 - 20 on any one day.

First of all the one thing we noticed none of them were grey and white nor grey at all.  They were all, to my eyes, quite warm and brown, lacking any strong olive tones and very plain underparts.  Many of them showed hardly any signs of a wing bar often with just a light hint of one.

However, whatever they looked like, they all sounded the same… A distinctive monosyllable dunnock type call.  Absolutely nothing like our chiffchaffs.  So as long they call, they're easy… that is, until somebody tells me otherwise.

A total of 26 Tristis chiffchaffs were caught.
